Just Aircraft Highlander

I am interested in this forum because I would like to know how the UL350iS is performing for pilots and share my experiences. Currently, I have the UL350iS (with 150 hours) in a Just Aircraft Highlander, 74"X34 Catto propreller, 29" Bushwheels, and Dynon Panels. For the most part the engine has performed very well, good power and smooth except for a few problems which I will be sharing in future posts. The Highlander really started performing well once I found the correct propeller combination for my backcountry flying. For now I would really like to know of any pilots outside the USA that are currently flying a UL350.

Hi Steve,
For sure, there are 3 persons in this forum who own a UL POWER engine. Perhaps there are more.
You already know one in indian ocean / south africa.
One of them is french. He doesn't like writings, but in a few times he will go in the USA in flight as to make a travel inside your country. He will go there with a copilot who speaks english fluently. I am sure you'll obtain a many informations. Both know very well these powerplants and are very competent.
The second one is a belgian. I don't know wether he is able to express in english or not.
I'll tell them you are here and advise them "translate Google" or "Google traduction" : http://translate.google.com/
Cheers.

Hi Steve,
Nice airplane and nice equipment choices too !
Thanks for sharing and asking about UL350i experiences; it'll definitely be interresting for all of us.
I wish you nice flights !

Admin : En noir : les traductions par Google :

That is good to hear of other 350 owners on the forum. Have you told those owners that I would like to contract them? I would be glad to use the google translator to help us communicate.

I do know a couple of other 260 and 350 onwners in the USA that I will tell about this forum.

I am sorry Steve, I haven't. When I discovered that you had serious problems with your engine, I decided to not contact the other owners. I do not want the administrator to be accused of impartiality, or to create a controversy. The owners will have to discover your message spontaneously. If I had to talk about this engine or any problem that does not concern me as administrator, I would do with a pseudonym as any other member.

Hi Steve,
Very Nice bird you have there. And what a F... panel. Almost as many bucks as in front of the firewall!!!.
You can see mine on my avatar and in the link below.
you seem to have problems with your engine.
If I'm right, maybe you could give some more info. In case somebody here would have heared or seen something about this.
I don't know this engine, flying a Suzuki Bandit based "rice burner" :D :D
But maybe some others know it a little better.

Salut Steve,

Hi Gazaille100,
You also have a very nice looking bird. If you compare the Dynon Skyview panel to Garmin panel, the Dynons are inexpensive :D

I have not seen the Vija engines in the US, it looks like a well designed engine and very clean.

I will be talking about issues and a few other areas of the engine which I (and my aircraft mechanic friends) feel could be improved to make it a great engine in the light aircraft market. I will be posting about those next week.

thanks for comments and yes, harley owners are pretty much snobs when it comes to any other bike, I don't understand why because most rice burners kick the crap out of them in speed and handling :D

UL350 update;
Talked to ULPower Belgium today for about an hour and went thru their analysis process with my engine and the knocking sound. What they told me makes me feel a little better about the problem. If they check everything the way they said they did, the engine should be in good shape. Unfortunately they are as baffled with the knocking sound. The knocking was only noticeable after it had been warmed to operating temperature. It only occurred when I pulled back and forth on the end of one prop blade while it was in the 180 degree position. I could not hear anything while flying or taxing, the oil pressure and temps never indicated any problems and when I had the oil analysed it had no substantial traces of metal and less metal then the previous analysis. ULP just cannot understand were that was coming from, it would have been much better if they had been able to duplicate the sound, however they could not. ULP disassemble the engine and split the crankcasse and measured all the tolerances which were all good. Even though I felt I ruled out any possibility of the knocking coming from any source other then the inside of the engine, ULP thought it could have been originated by an external source and resonated through the engine. I'm hoping it is just a weird characteristic of the engine based on the placement of the propeller relative to the alignment of the internal assembly of the crankshaft, push rods, pistons and camshaft :?
The second problem was a serious cylinder head oil line leaks which occured twice on the same cylinder and resulted in me being grounded in a back country airstrip. Fortunately the USA distributor did an excellent job of getting me another part overnite to a near by location where I was able to install the new oil line. As everyone knows the loss of oil is a serious issue ANYTIME especially when doing a lot of back country flying. ULP admitted they need to do a better job of informing the customers of these kinds of issues and I assume they will improve or their customer base will lose faith and that is death to engine sales. Based on the call I had with them today is sounds like they have come up with a good fix for the oil line problem which we discussed in detail. I should be getting some pictures of the modification from them in the next couple of days. They said they are also in the process of notifying and providing the update line to the 350 customers with the bad lines. Hopefully my engine will be on an airplane back to me this week. :D

Hi Steve,
I know you have recorded this sound. Is it on utube ?
Cheers.

Bonjour Steve,
Salut

Thanks, I hope to do many more videos when I have a flying airplane again. I have a new camera system I will be installing on a pan and tilt unit camera unit.
