Gosh (to be polite, my first word started by an F), I know this place!!!!!
It's called "Pilots paradize" isn't it?
Not so easy to find in France.
You are a lucky guy, with such landscapes and "airstrips".
Just mind the bears while fishing salmons ;-)

HI
Flying french Alpes, up to FL140, flying offshore to reach Corsica, we do need reliable engine as well,
In france we have alot of small private airfield, but we don't have such "airstrips" a lot.

I just picked up my engine today and delivered it to my hanger. I'm doing some modifications on the cowling and installing a new windshield so I probably won't be running it for about a month. I will keep you posted on the progress and when I get a chance to go over the engine in the next couple days I'll let you know if there is anything new on it. I do know they fixed the problem with the oil lines. The replaced crankshaft bearings were also returned to me, I'll be bringing them to my Aircraft mechanic examination.

Here is the fix for the oil line issue on the 350iS, looks like this will work well, the bottom oil line is the new configuration. You can see by the second picture where the original lines were failing.

It looks like UL Power support is working out the solutions...
Any news about the strange noise you're experiencing :?: By the way, did you have any chance to record it since :?:

According to UL they were unable to duplicate the sound they saw and heard in the video I sent them:? I am having a couple of mechanics evaluate the crank shaft and connection rod bearing which were returned to me, maybe that might give us some clue :(

After examining the returned main bearings with a number of A&P mechanics and going through all the other information with them and other experienced mechanics, I a feeling better about of my engine. Here are some of the conclusions we have come up with.

The knocking sound created when pulling on the prop could be the result of the heat expansion characteristics of an aluminum crankcase vs. steel main bearings and crankshaft. My reasoning behind this is;
1. It only happens after the engine has been heated to operating temperatures
2. A Lab analysis of the oil showed no significant metal contaminates. There was less metal in the latest analysis than the previous oil analysis.
3. The increase of axial leverage put on the crankshaft when pulling on the end of one prop blade (which is not normal for the engine) in combination with the increased clearance between the main bearings and crankcase bearing seats (due to heat expansion) could cause a normal tapping sound to be amplified into a knocking sound. This was the thoughts of a couple other mechanics that had run across this situation in other engines. The unknown issue is whether or not the clearance continues to remain in spec during operating temps which I assume they are.
4. The main bearings were also examined by a couple of aircraft mechanics which told me that the wear pattern of the removed bearings was typical for opposed cylinder engines. I measured the worn area of the bearing against the non-worn areas and there was no measurable difference in the thickness which means they were good. No grooves in any kind were found on the bearings.
5. ULPower also said that there was a bluing effect on the bearing which they contributed to running the engine hot. According to the mechanics that examined the bearings, none of them could see any signs of overheating. I’ve also tested my instrument probes in boiling water and they are calibrated correctly, so I’m not sure where ULPower came up with this “overheating” conclusion.
6. During the 10 hours of flying which I knew of the knocking sound, I never once noticed any unusual sounds in flight, issues with oil temp or pressure, vibration or power loose of any kind.

The oil line fitting fix looks like a much better configuration then the previous bubble flare (which was the stress point that failed). They have also gone to softer seamless steel tubing for the assembly which in combination with the new fitting should eliminate any stress points in the assembly.

The thrust bearing assembly is holding up good, no leak from the front hub since it was redesign to apply double the preload on spring washers. ULPower stated that there was some wear on the spring washers which they claim could only happen if i was running a loose hub. Not only did I verify the torque on the hub 4 times during the 150 hours of flight, I also verified it just before returning the engine to ULPower. I feel this is incorrect becasuse there was no wear on the end of the hub which seats to the end of the crank shaft and if the hub had a loose hub that area would also show wear and it did not. The only other conclusion is that the pre-load in the thrust bearing assembly needs to be increased slightly.

Only time will tell on how this engine will do in the market so I am going re-install the engine and fly the crap out of it :D . I will keep the forum posted of my progess.

I had to replace my windscreen and decided to build a new cowl for better air flow. It will not be ready to fly for about a month. I have not had it in the air since I received the engine back. I will let you know as soon I get it flying again.

I started out with a jabiru cowl for the Highlander. The jabiru cowl is too narrow for the 350 so I built a mold to make cheeks for it. Here are pictures fitting the cheeks to the cowl.
