Call me dumb, but I need to ask: "What is the reason/function of the centrifugal clutches?" — I have installed engines in aircraft before, but never needed these. There must be an obvious reason for these or you would not have gone through the trouble of making them. In videos of Jay Carter's machine jumping I can see that the prop stops end then goes again. I understand that it is used there at the time that the engine spins up the rotor, but I do not understand the need in a machine like Ron's

Jim I think that is a very good question that I will be happy to answer.
There are really two reasons for the clutch.
1. The centrifugal clutch makes the aircraft safer on the ground by not having a prop swinging around trying to take you out, it is safer for the pilot as well as a non thinking onlooker who runs up to your aircraft even though you are telling them not to.
2. The Yamaha engines are set up to carry no load at idle during warm up. The variable clutch on a stock sled engages at about 4,000 rpm.
When you "lock" the re drive to the engine it has to carry the load of turning the gearbox as well as the prop, even during initial startup so it really makes the engine run rough during warm up. The bigger the prop the more rough it runs.
There are two ways to solve this issue,
a. Resize the idle jets in the carburetors would probably help but would not totally solve the problem.
b. Do the centrifugal clutch, You solve the idle problem and also make your aircraft safer for yourself and others at the same time.
that is why we went with solution b.
Thanks for asking,
Todd

Cordialement.
