EDRA and The Super Petrel LS
Motivated by the huge Brazilian continental dimensions, water abundance and remarkable aeronautical tradition, EDRA Aeronáutica designed, developed and manufactured a composite material amphibious aircraft called Super Petrel LS.
The Super Petrel LS is a very versatile and resistant amphibious ultralight which offers similar performance comparing to conventional aircrafts of the same category. Besides being beautiful, elegant and safe it has incomparable flight quality providing docile and precise pilotage in all speed ranges. In the water its performance is unbeatable, taking-off and landing on short distances without any restrictions becoming this way a complete aircraft. The Super Petrel is a worldwide success with more than 200 units sold in Brazil and 22 countries around the world
Configuration
Amphibious Ultralight with pusher engine, biplane and sesquiplane with positive decalage. Besides being beautiful and elegant this configuration makes its structure naturally resistant and efficient.
Construction
Most of the aircraft parts are made of the highest quality composite materials such as carbon fiber, Kevlar, fiberglass, PVC foams, epoxy resins, combined and laminated using the most advanced manufacturing techniques for each component or structure part presenting an excellent resistance/weight rate, corrosion resistance and plasticity.
Aeronautical aluminum alloys like the 6061-T6 and 2014-T6 are also employed as well as the stainless steel protecting each structure component mainly from corrosive environments like the seawater.
All stainless steel and aluminum parts are cut by laser and water by high pressure. The shock absorbers are filled with nitrogen and hydraulic brakes are used with discs on the wheels providing much more safety during the take-offs and landings.
The coating and finishing are made with polyurethane paint ensuring aircraft total protection.
Aerodynamics and Flight Characteristics
The airfoil used in the wings is the NACA 2412, same employed on the famous and efficient Cessna 182 Skylane. This airfoil is well-known for its very predictable and balanced behavior in any flight conditions. Combined with the neutral characteristics of the Center of Pressure (CP) we meet flight conditions nearly as good as a medium wing airplane.
The stabilizer and control surfaces counts with an airfoil as profile providing easy and precise controllability in any speed range as well as curves. The retractable landing gear contributes to flight harmony and low drag.
Super Petrel LS is a very stable and docile airplane with the best performance in its category.
Hydrodynamics
The hull and fuselage shapes were optimized and due to its large frontal volume which allows safe operations, avoids aircraft nose submersion when taking-off and landing in the water.
The hull is built with materials and technology applied in off-shore boats allowing this way operations on wavy water surfaces. It absorbs with safety and tranquility impacts coming from defective take-off and landing maneuvers .
The lower wings also have the function of deflecting the water spray away from the propeller maintaining its integrity and providing safety on operations even in dirty water or places with floating solid residuals.
Powerplant
The recommended powerplant is the reliable Rotax 912 ULS engine, 4 stroke, 100 HP.
The propeller that best fits the aircraft and powerplant is the French Arplast Ecoprop made of composite material with 65 inches diameter and pitch-adjusted on the ground.
The engine mount and vibration absorbers are designed to lower the vibration level transmitted from the engine to the structure, minimizing the cabin´s noise level and maintenance.
Special Features
• Comfortable positioning on the rudder pedals;
• Instrument panel positioned near the pilot with friendly reading and access;
• Precise and safe landing-gear retraction system;
• Spacious and comfortable cockpit;
• Easy wheels and brake system maintenance;
• Baggage compartment behind the cockpit;
• Perfect positioning of the thrust line providing better performance and balance during take-off and landing;
• Wings with washout providing smooth stall characteristics with no tendencies;
• Removable wing floats providing easy operation when the situation does not require take-offs and landings in the water;
• Winglets on all wings providing induced drag reduction.
Certification and Engineering
All Super Petrel LS structural engineering, aerodynamics and hydrodynamics tests were made based on ASTM standards required by LSA (Light Sports Certification) in the United States.
The ELA (European Light Aircraft) which is being developed by EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) is as well based on ASTM standards which are technically the most restrictive and demanding applied to light sport aviation.
In its standard configuration, the Super Petrel LS complies with Very Light Aircraft / Micro Light JAR-VLA regulation though such registration requires certification tests for each particular country.
The Super Petrel LS is manufactured under severe quality system involving execution, inspection and control step-by-step providing full tracking record.
Improvements for the brand new Super Petrel LS
• New fuselage design with better aerodynamics;
• New canopy, doors and locks;
• Vertical and horizontal stabilizers made of new composite materials;
• Upper wings spar and central section made of new composite materials;
• New lower wings with fiberglass incorporated tanks (90 liters);
• MTOW of 495 kg (UL) and 600 Kg (LSA) +4/-2 G;
• Cruise speed of 110 Mph;
• VNE of 130 Mph;
• New ballistic recovery system installation;
• Wider instrument panel;
• Optional Dynon EFIS, EMS and Auto Pilot;
• Longer aircraft´s lenght;
• Wider and lower cockpit doors making the aircraft´s entry and exit much easier;
• Ergonomic panel divided into 3 sections with a central console;
• Bigger side pockets to keep your belongings, charts, etc.;
• Completely reconstructed carbon and kevlar tail without struts;
• More rigid and efficient tail with less drag.
